This page of Mileage Workshop used to offer many opportunities for seniors to save on air travel. Regretfully, the airlines have trimmed many of these programs out of their marketing focus. Effedtive August 2002: US Airways' announcement last week, three more airlines said they had discontinued the once-standard 10 percent senior discount and their senior coupons. American, Delta, and Northwest joined US Airways in eliminating the 10 percent discount. If you already have a ticket, you can use it, but no more will be sold. Neither Continental nor United made any announcements, one way or another, about their 10 percent senior discounts. Southwest, which always published special senior fares rather than giving a flat 10 percent discount, said it would continue its program for seniors, ages 65 or over. Southwest's senior fares are not always below its cheapest any-age fares, but they're refundable and far less restricted. Northwest said it would no longer sell senior coupons. Delta and Northwest announced they would follow Southwest's pattern of offering special senior fares. Northwest's will be for travelers ages 65 or over, up from the 62-year threshold for the former discounts and coupons, but the line gave no details on possible restrictions. Delta said it would also post senior fares requiring a 14-day advance purchase and Saturday-night stay, but with no information yet on the age limit. US Airways said it was still selling senior coupons, at least for now.
